Twilight Zone movies (but not Twilight Zone: The Movie)

So I just saw Companion, which joins the ranks of a subgenre I like to call “Twilight Zone Movies”. Also included: Ex Machina, most M. Night Shyamalan films…

Basically, yknow, movies that

  • have a central science fiction or fantasy-based premise but are ostensibly set in the contemporary, real world (or maybe one door down from the real world)

  • have elements of suspense and unsettling content but aren’t really horror movies

  • are meant to have some kind of social message or philosophical contemplation

  • intimate and small in the dramatization; the apocalypse may occur, but if it does, you’re only going to hear about it on TV

What other movies fall into this subgenre?
