Twilight Zone movies (but not Twilight Zone: The Movie)
So I just saw Companion, which joins the ranks of a subgenre I like to call “Twilight Zone Movies”. Also included: Ex Machina, most M. Night Shyamalan films…
Basically, yknow, movies that
have a central science fiction or fantasy-based premise but are ostensibly set in the contemporary, real world (or maybe one door down from the real world)
have elements of suspense and unsettling content but aren’t really horror movies
are meant to have some kind of social message or philosophical contemplation
intimate and small in the dramatization; the apocalypse may occur, but if it does, you’re only going to hear about it on TV
What other movies fall into this subgenre?
