I need a direct answer

I have been trying to figure this out, but I can't find an exact answer anywhere. If my buddy has PC gamepass, can he play with me and my xbox friends? Or does he absolutely have to have the windows store version of the game? Nobody says anything about PC gamepass version in any of the discussions I've seen.
