whatsapp with google voice

I had used this same GV number on whatsapp in the past. Now when I try to use it again, I get error "the phone number you entered is not a valid mobile number for US". So, can't use GV for whatsapp now?

I used it last on android device 1 year ago. now using iphone and doesn't seem to work.
